The year is 1863. While immigrant Irish are being herded off the boats to fight in the war and while the average American family falls apart as brother fights brother over issues of slavery, the Civil War is merely the latest topic of discussion for some members of the upper classes. Some individuals even find ways to prosper during these times.
A Wartime Affair is the story of one such individual, Charles Bergman. This English banker comes to New York City looking to recover money and family reputation lost in a railroad deal that turned bad. With amazing craftiness, this conman not only turns a profit through stolen arms sales but gains yet another kept woman.
This book takes an unabashed look at poverty, racism, elitism, privilege, and crime during this time period. It also gives insight into the mind of rich and prosperous of the time. It is unsettling to think that such a lack of caring for fellow men, such greed, and such shear arrogance could exist. Even more frightening is the fact that the attitudes discussed in this book are consistent with the norms of the time.
