Heart of the Woolf by Kai Anderson is anchored by the relationship between Adrienne Lee, a rising star in the public relations business, and her boss at the firm Creative Minds, Jake Woolf.  The two try to hide their mutual attraction from each other, as well as keeping separate secrets under wraps.

We learn what Jake’s secret is at the very beginning – he’s a werewolf.  Though society has legally accepted and granted rights to werewolves, Jake and his kind continue to suffer discrimination, so he hides this part of his identity from co-workers and casual acquaintances.  Jake’s also been hurt by a woman who couldn’t handle his wolfishness, giving him more reason to keep this secret from Adrienne.

Adrienne wants to keep her attraction to Jake under wraps for business reasons.  Her big secret, however, involves her identity and her personal safety. Eventually, both come to light.

There are some very steamy fantasy and sex scenes in this novel. The relationship between Jake and Adrienne develops at a nice pace, and Jake’s ability to read Adrienne’s mind brings welcome lightheartedness to the “will-they-or-won’t-they?” part of the story. The only exception to the otherwise tight romance plot is Adrienne’s behavior around Jake in the office – it’s a little unrealistic that a career-focused woman who can endure the harassment of her underlings would get so lost in sexual fantasy during a meeting with the boss that she finds herself seductively leaning over him, breasts in his face. She should be more in tune to the jeopardy. Especially considering that she is trying to hide her identity.

The major problem with this novel is that the plot involving Adrienne’s secret is never resolved. As I said, it comes to light, and Jake and the other characters get new information, but the novel ends with the danger still hanging in the air and all the reader’s questions unanswered.

Also, I had to question why Jake was a werewolf. This particular identity didn’t seem crucial to the plot or any of his actions, with the exception of the mind reading.

Though Heart of the Woolf has problems, the relationship plot is well done and the sex scenes are hot.  Those who have a real taste for paranormal erotic may find that that element is not strong enough, and those who prefer more realistic erotic may wonder about the werewolf aspect.  The unresolved plot involving Adrienne is the only really frustrating aspect of the novel.
