The story, Dead by the Sea, by Don Donoghue, opens when body has been found on the beach somewhere in Queensland Australia. As the body count, and danger, grows, the main character, Jim Groggan, changes from a young, bored vacationer who spends his days fishing to a gun toting major player in the midst of a drug and homicide investigation. While it is the police who ostensibly solve the crime, it is Groggan who ties the loose ends together and delivers the tale to the audience.
This story has some of the feel of a Travis McGee mystery (by John D. MacDonald), but with a younger, more hopeful and innocent McGee. Donoghue also did a good job of placing the tale in a time and place where technology doesn't take over the story so it can still be believable while being solved by basic police procedure and a young hero's ingenuity. This is an entertaining read, perfect for the vacationer wishing for a good read while sunbathing on the beach.
