Jilly and Willy is the tale of a young girl and her dog, Willy. It takes you through their lives as they grow together and eventually must be parted. I am not sure this story will be a good fit for the younger children. Not because of the very real issues it addresses, such as growing older and the inevitable separation brought about by death, but because of the length of the story.
My three and four year old quickly lost interest, asking me to turn the page long before I could finish reading what was on the current one. As an adult, I was able to appreciate the message behind the tale. However, I think it could have been delivered with tighter writing and less words to each page. When targeting an audience of small children, their attention spans must be kept in mind, especially when writing about issues that are as deep as the cycle of life.
Although I enjoyed this story, I have to say it may not be a good fit with the youngsters due only to the length and not the quality.
