This novel is an old-fashioned, feel-good romance, light on sex but full of suspense, misunderstandings, and old secrets revealed. When Katelyn, the hard-working, talented and beautiful heroine, is called “Genean” by a handsome neighbor of her old college friend in rustic Wisconsin, Katelyn thinks he has simply made an annoying mistake. Not so. Katelyn, adopted at birth, unwillingly meets the loving family she never knew before, including her twin sister. Katelyn feels drawn to the handsome neighbor, but there are complications: she has a home and a successful advertising business in Denver, Colorado, and she is unofficially engaged to marry an older man who seems to offer her stability without passion. She is still grieving for her adopted parents, recently-killed in an accident, and reasonably afraid of being scammed for her wealth. The handsome man in Wisconsin is a skilled woodworker and high-school teacher with an income much lower than hers; can she afford to trust him? In a series of plot twists, she finds out who is trustworthy and who is not, but she and the man who is clearly her soul-mate run and hide from each other until the last scene in this 200-page epic. There is a little too much melodrama here for my taste (must every romance include at least one emergency trip to the hospital?), but the plot moves quickly and the author is skilled at creating tension and then resolving it while treating the reader to some local color from two distinct regions of the U.S. And all the good people live happily ever after.
