Tooth and Claw by T.C. Boyle is a collection of short stories brought together under the umbrella of extremism. These are finely crafted stories about characters who choose to push the envelope in certain areas of their lives, or deal with extreme forms of nature without quite becoming the caricatures that they could so easily become. In each story the reader is intimately connected to the main characters as they ride the cataclysm that is their life. In fact, Boyle has finely illustrated personalities and situations that are so acutely excessive in nature that they border on the supernatural. There are no ghosts, monsters, witches or wizards in these accounts. There are no mysterious happenings that can only be explained by mystical experiences. These are all natural, albeit extreme, occurrences. Yet, for the reader, taken together, they create an impression of mythic realism of the extraordinary happening in the ordinary world. A good collection to have, especially for T.C. Boyle fans.
