The autobiography of author Lily Shaine, Sleeping Arrangements, is about her early childhood years in the urban jungle of the 1950's Bronx. After losing her mother to illness at an early age, Lily's care is taken over by her two bachelor uncles - Len, a six-foot-six private investigator, and Gabe, a quiet librarian who writes songs in his spare time.
With very little routine, grooming or supervision, but a whole lot of love, young Lily learns all about life, death and sex on the streets of New York.
I found Sleeping Arrangements to be an enjoyable read, written with humor and style. The love that Lily shares with her unique family is palpable, bringing a sense of joy to the reading of what would otherwise be a very sad tale.
