Turned Away: the World War II Diary of Devorah Bernstein is the fictional account of an eleven year old girl during World War II. Devorah is an average Canadian girl living in Winnipeg, Manitoba who is troubled and confused by the events occurring in Europe. For the most part, her life is quite normal and peaceful so it is difficult for her to understand the hatred occurring against Jews in Germany and in France where her cousin Sarah lives or the war that her two brothers have volunteered to serve in.
Although the actual events described in this book are fictional, the basis of all of the situations and accounts are based upon real events. Not only has the author done a great deal of research that she had pieced into this book but she has also included several real life storylines from her own family experiences.
