When I first received this book, I thought, oh no, a love story. I don’t read love stories, and certainly not about Superman. I was reluctant to get started on it because I just knew that I wouldn’t like it. But, oh boy, what a love story it turned out to be. I never watched Superman, that was for my children, so I really didn’t know much about Christopher Reeve. Thanks to Christopher Andersen, the author, I started reading and only laid it down once to eat. I finished it in two settings.
Somewhere in Heaven is a book about two people who met and fell in love instantly with each other, but didn’t want to admit it to themselves. They both wanted to concentrate on their careers, and to add to the dilemma, Christopher Reeve never wanted to get married because of all the divorces in his family. As it turned out, Dana was the perfect wife for him and should have been called Superwoman.
Christopher Andersen packs so much happiness and so much sadness into this little book. No one could have told this true story better. It’s heart breaking when Christopher Reeve gets so badly injured and it’s hard to imagine how he went thru all the pain and indignities for the rest of his short life. He really was a super man and Dana with the love and support she lavished on him was exceptional. Not many women would have been able to cope with what she went through.
I liked the way Mr.Andersen kept little Will in the story and let him be a part of what was going on with his father all the way through this tragic story. I also admired Dana for winning over the two step children and keeping them as a close part of the family. Christopher Reeve was at least blessed in that way. It sure was sad to read where she went to heaven too at such a young age.
I think every one could learn something about true love and unselfishness from this book. It’s a bit overwhelming, but a giant of a little book.
