The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd
Joe Camp
Harmony Books
ISBN: 978030740859
Nonfiction, Human- Animal Relationships
Reviewed by John R. Clark

I expected to like this book. What I didn't expect was to be captivated by it, but I was, both from the standpoint of the honesty and self-discovery and by the alternating narrative between the author and a mythical band of wild horses brought to America centuries ago. Joe Camp has given horse lovers a true eye-opening gift. His voyage of awareness and self-discovery, always low-key opens new vistas in the care, training and interaction between horse and owner.

While the book will find detractors, it will also force many who own or work with horses to see their charges in an entirely new light. I suspect many who read this book will at the very least, begin to question how they have trained, boarded and cared for horses in the past.

Non-horse owners who love a good story about self-discovery or the joy of learning about animals will also enjoy this book. I am happy to add it to the collection at the Hartland Public Library where I expect it will see a lot of use.
