This is my first Kim Harrison read, but it will not be my last. As a librarian, I spend considerable time making suggestions to patrons about new books/authors when they run dry. My usual suggestion: pick up a book and read five pages. If you're still interested, chances are you have a winner. This book did it in one.
While not having read the previous books in the series made the read a tad more challenging than usual, I like the protagonist a lot, particularly her edginess. This is a book with plenty of suspense, decent evil and magic. In sum, everything a modernish fantasy needs to get a reader sitting in a chair and quickly become oblivious to everything in the real world while trying to find out what the deal is with multiple interesting characters, destinations and sub-plots.
This is a no-brainer for individuals and libraries already familiar with the series. I do suggest that those who like urban fantasy/gothic flavored books, but aren't familiar with the series treat yourself by starting with the first book in the series and leave this for dessert.
