Annie: The Mysterious Morgan Horse
Ellen F. Feld
Willow Bend Publishing
ISBN: 9780970900296
Fiction, Juvenile Fiction
Reviewed by John R. Clark

The latest entry in Ellen Feld's Morgan Horse Series will thoroughly please fans of the series as well as capture the hearts of newcomers. Annie, the mysterious Morgan horse escapes a fire at the barn where she is housed. After her abusive trainer lies, telling his boss and Annie's owner that she perished in the fire, she finds her way to another farm where she is taken in. The farmer has no extra stall and his Arabian herd isn't especially thrilled by the newcomer, so Annie begins an odyssey that eventually reunites her with Blackjack, another Morgan rescued from the clutches of the cruel trainer, Jim Spencer.

The crux of the story revolves around Heather Richardson's growing affection for Annie while Chauncy Campbell, owner of Gallant Morgan Horse Farm tries to trace Annie's mysterious past in order to determine whether she is a registered Morgan. If not, he may have to sell her, a prospect that has Heather very concerned.

In addition to a wonderful story line, young readers will learn much about the basics of training, veterinary care of horses and the consequences of lying. They will also be introduced to a bit of the lore surrounding Justin Morgan.

This is a great book for horse lovers of any age and would be a fine acquisition for both public and school libraries.
