One Bird Sings

One Bird Sings is a collection of poems by Betty Vos. The book itself is divided into sections with each part representing a main theme. All Creation and Through the Season have nature themes. Everyone We Touch looks at loved ones that leave their stamp upon us (and we them). Sacred Gifts takes a wider more spiritual view of the world. Blow After Blow could be best termed life lessons.

I find this work a little more complex and three dimensional than many other like compilations that I’ve reviewed. Each of these sections has its own unique feel, voice, and flow that reflects the overall theme showing the author’s ability to adapt and change with her subject matter. It is a unique gift that not all poets possess.

I have a number of favourite pieces from this collection. Incarnation spoke of the oneness of us all- “…a point of connection…”. Perhaps reflects upon the notion that life is about experiencing- “…Not making plans and setting snares…”. In Between reminds us to see past our “…grasping, busy lives” to the “…small silent spaces…”. In I do not often speak the darkness I saw the deep into the author and saw a strong woman who steadfastly focuses on the hard fought light that was gained by surviving the darkness.
