Javascript & DHTML Cookbook

Non-Fiction, Computer, Web Development Handbooks
Reviewed by John R. Clark

I confess to being in the early stages of sophisticated web page development. Having made this confession, I have to say that Danny Goodman has done a stellar job revising and updating this book. He has written a cookbook that can appeal to web developers at all levels, even mine. His approaches to each of the 150 or so recipes for successful debugging/fixing are both rich and straightforward. He defines the problem; for example "You want to speed up sluggish script." He then describes a solution that gives you a script-specific fix(s) with considerable discussion about each, while telling you why the problem was occurring in the first place. He finishes up nicely by pointing to other sections of the book with related solutions. I was particularly intrigued with the solution to a calendar date picker. While the formula is a bit intimidating, I now have a roadmap to follow so I can do something I have wanted to try for some time.

While this book is probably a bit too powerful for my small public library, I will refer to it often and I am sure that it will get plenty of use via interlibrary loan. It is an excellent addition for larger public libraries as well as the community colleges in the state.
