The Rising Shore- Roanoke
Deborah Homsher
Blue Hull Press

Fiction, Historical Fiction
Reviewed by Dr. Tami Brady

The Rising Shore- Roanoke follows the lives of two very different women: Elenor White Dare and Margaret Lawrence. The tale begins in London in 1582. In this first scene Margaret becomes a servant for the White household.

John White is freshly married with a new son. Elenor is from his previous marriage. John, a painter, is in love with the New World. He is often gone for years at a time. Elenor is much like her father. She would like nothing more than to go with her father. In fact, she would have been the perfect son for John White.

Against her father’s wishes, Elenor and Margaret manage to get to the New World. Elenor’s daughter becomes the first English child to be born in America. It is a very difficult existence, one that doesn’t exactly have a happy ending.

Very well written. The Rising Shore- Roanoke is a fitting tribute to the men and women of The Lost Colony on Roanoke Island and to women who follow their dreams despite what society deems they should do with their lives.
