I found this book to be good reading. The setting is England, in horse and carriage days; it's a love story with a happy ending. Since the best part of the journey is not always arriving at the destination...I quite enjoyed the trip. I also have a soft spot for unconventional women...

The hero and heroine met when a young three-year-old girl was left on a bench in front of a hotel. A young well-to-do single woman, who had been traveling alone, responded to the child's weeping and shortly thereafter was approached by a gentleman who wanted to assist with the problem. The story revolves around the two of them caring for the child, searching for the mother of the child, and trying to deny their growing affection for each other. The young woman, Miss Valence, had been traveling in search of some meaning in her life. The gentleman, Mr. Kelmarsh, had personal reasons for his interest, although his personality was such that he would help anyone, whenever the opportunity presented itself. He was known for his generosity and was a wealthy self-made man. The child, Maude, is a very bright young girl who quickly becomes attached to both of them, and later exhibits understanding beyond her years.

The story is well written, maintains interest, and I would like to see a sequel.
