The Future Happens Twice is an epic first novel and Matt Browne should be commended. Might as well learn to swim in the deep end of the pool and Matt jumped right in with a story that spans 42,000 years. During that time, the Earth undergoes enormous change and most life succumbs to the ravages of a super-volcano. Humanity manages to survive by sending starships with cryogenically frozen embryos and later, adult humans, to a distant planet called Acantarius. The science is believable and well researched.
The only negative I have to say about the novel is its length. Sometimes less is more and the story bogs down in places due to overstating plot points. Mr. Browne should trust his reader’s imagination more. However, the well-developed storyline takes the reader into the psyche of the characters through words and actions, building insight into them slowly. The style reminds me of Asimov’s Foundation.
I found a few mechanical errors in the writing, but nothing that I could not get past. I recommend Future Happens Twice and look forward to Mr. Browne’s sequel.
