Life as Prose is an anthology of the author’s short stories, essays, and poems. Although the tone, format, media, and topic differs for each these pieces, they all express an important life lesson or illustrate some sort of life condition that we face in our everyday lives from birth to death.
I have to admit that I did enjoy the author’s poetry more than her short stories and essays in this collection. It must be said, however, that this bias had less to do with the quality or strength of the other pieces and more to do with my eagerness to see the author’s work in an entirely different format than her other fictional stories that I have previously enjoyed. In fact, I think that the use of differing presentation methods for these themes allows for fresh insight and greater depth into another facet of similar topics.
Of the poems, my favourites of the favourites included Apparition (a beautiful short poem that somehow connects to my subconscious being by using the phrase “a dream within the soul.”), Forsaken (for the vivid picture it created for me), Grandmother’s Mirror (for its timelessness), and This Voyage (with its simply yet poignant summation of life).
