Trials and Tribulations is the story of a family, so to speak. The first chapter introduces the reader to Betty and Tommy. Their mother had died four years before, when Tommy had been born. Young Betty had taken over the care of her brother and the general household. As if this tragedy was not enough for the family, their father had just been killed in the mill. Now Betty and Tommy were completely homeless, without anyone to care for them.
Without a clue about how they will survive, Betty decides that she and Tommy must go to Whitby. Their father had often mentioned that there was work in Whitby and life would be better if only they made the trip. Unfortunately, the journey would be fraught with even more trials and tribulations. Then, even once at Whitby, the children’s lives would never seem to be completely peaceful.
Trials and Tribulations is a rollercoaster ride of life’s ups and downs. The book reads as a series of family and community happens that draw the reader through the lives of these people. For the most part, life is very harsh but nonetheless they do find love and a family of sorts.
