Son of Heaven

Historical Erotic Romance, BDSM
Reviewed by Shannon Frost

After her engagement falls through with her fiancé choosing a woman of more wealth and influence, Miss Charlotte Freely is quite content with the idea of being a spinster for the rest of her life, until she meets the handsome and charming Chinese nobleman, Song Chao Ming. As an Englishwoman in China, she knows a relationship with Chao Ming is forbidden, but he’s sparked something inside her, passions and desires like she’s never felt, and now that her feelings have been ignited, all she can do is follow them. When her stepbrother, Edward, decides to marry her off to a friend and business partner, Charlotte flees to the one place she knows she’ll always be safe, the arms of Chao Ming. Under his masterful touch, she begins to learn the pleasures of submitting completely to his will. Even as she surrenders to Chao Ming, Edward hunts her down and drags her away from him. But no amount of distance or bigotry is strong enough to keep her from the man she has come to know as Master and she’s prepared to defy all in order to be with him.

Set in China, author Lorenz does a wonderful job in creating everything from the beauty of the country and customs, to the ugliness of the racism that was inflicted upon the Chinese by foreigners in their country. Charlotte is a fully three-dimensional character, and her plight of trying to break free of the strict Victorian ideals she’s always known to become of woman who can openly enjoy intimacy feels very believable. Song Chao Ming, however, comes across feeling a little underdeveloped as there’s little internal thought or struggles shown for him. From what’s seen of him, Chao Ming’s a deeply fascinating character, and there’s a history behind him that would have been interesting to learn more about. The love scenes are incredibly varied in acts. Each one is erotically and graphically written, and the author does an excellent job in building a strong dominant/submissive relationship between the two characters. With its fine writing, its historical setting and the passionate couple of Charlotte and Chao Ming, Son of Heaven is a great read that sets itself apart from other erotica novels as a wholly unique work.
