In Russellton, Montana not much happens in the way of change or activity. Life is simple and with a population of only 1200, everyone knows the goings on of everyone else. Beth Fenton grew up in Russellton but left for college. She now lives in California as a curatorial assistant in a museum. After working many long hours, she is finally up for a promotion. She has come home to “The Shamrocks” to stay while she prepares an exhibit which could move her up the ladder. Although everyone in Russellton knows Beth as a little off center because of her taste for historical art and vintage clothing, not to mention her somewhat small stature (earning her the nickname “Elfie”), many just misunderstand her. Right now, she is looking forward to a peaceful stay, a chance to focus on her work and hopefully advance her career.

“The Shamrocks” belong to old family friends’, in particular; their son is Beth’s object of affection of a longstanding crush since high school. Finnian Quaid, a handsome, bright, young man is now considering a run for political office. His potential backers advised Finn that his political image suffered if he is single so he should become “engaged” immediately. With that, Finn began searching for a short-term fiancée. When Beth came to town, he sees her as a perfect candidate for the position. After a little negotiation, Beth agrees and the two began their plan as an “engaged” couple.

However, Finn’s plan goes awry. Between Beth’s frustrations to write for her exhibit, Finn’s misunderstandings of her behavior, and the small town gossiping that always appeared in front of “The Shamrocks” doorstep or written in the town paper, small town antics prevailed. Not to mention, both Beth and Finn are suddenly flushed with unexpected emotions toward each other.

Ms. Chase writes a romantic novel which easily speaks to many readers through laughter, memories, loss, and, of course, love. Her ability to vividly describe so many simultaneously occurring events keeps readers turning the pages in anticipation. This is a sweet, colorful, and humorous read.
