This is an excellent book that succeeds on several levels. First, while a workout book, it is also fun to read. LL Cool J is both articulate and funny. His style of writing guides the reader through a great introduction that explains how he came to look at his lifestyle and body image and then find the right people to help him get where he wanted to be. Second, the author and the publisher, Rodale Press, involved highly knowledgeable people to cover the actual workouts and an extensive segment on nutrition.
Third, is the recognition that not everyone buying/reading the book will want or need to go the the same workout level as the author. Thus, there are four different workout programs (bronze, silver, gold and platinum) for men as well as a diamond workout program for women.
The contributions by trainer Dave Honig and nutritionist Christopher Mohr are nicely integrated into the book, not simply tacked on and the photography by Joan Allen in particular are bright, clear and demonstrate the accompanying workout regimes very nicely. I particularly like the emphasis on the importance of nutrition and the flat out declaration that steroids have no place in any workout regime.
This will be a welcome addition to the Hartland Public Library where both teen athletes and other patrons interested in improving their physical and accompanying mental wellbeing will find it very helpful.
