Vivianne is recuperating at her brother's apartment more than ready to head back to some semblance of real life and work, is much relieved to get a call from her brother's partner, to see and hear his report on his find, a Neanderthal skull, at the museum. Meeting up with Maximillian and his friend on the subway, talk initially started on her book, co-authored by her brother and Claude. Max and his friend were very interested in the talk she was going to hear. Vivianne is acting out of character for herself, talking freely to strangers, heading out to lunch, and then agreeing to pet sit for him. She wonders what has gotten into her besides a slight case of lust for Max's shapely body. Unbeknown to her, Max is one of the Neanderthal males, so are all the acquaintances he's introduced her to. Mysteries start happening, first one murder followed by another, all the tenants in her brother's building seemingly become potential suspects. It seems the mystery also contains Claude and his find, Vivianne starts to wonder if he took it out of the country illegally and is now afraid of the consequences that will follow his actions. Max and his group of finders are hunting up the actual remains, and returning them to their proper resting places, also hiding the truth of the Neanderthals, keeping the humans unaware of their existence by any means.

Competitors is a fast paced read, with a very well written cast of characters that support and play up each other. Good attention paid to the details, so one can understand the differences between the characters and the races involved. Susan Knight has granted her audience fantasy and mystery combined with a science fictional blend along with a romantic edge to satisfy most any readers taste.
