I usually don’t read short stories. Most short stories I read right me unsatisfied and wanting more. A lot of authors just can’t get’em right and they wind up being a short clip from a larger story that could have been great. I like spending quality time getting to know the characters; watching them develop. Short stories rarely accomplish this like a novel does.
When I do read short stories I stick to authors who I know can pull it off. Authors like King, Koontz, Barker, and Bentley Little.
I almost didn’t accept this review for the simple fact that it was a book of short stories. But, I took a chance and I’m glad that I did. I can now add Wade Hunter to the list of authors above.
Shadows of the Soul is a great book of nine shorts done right
In Dreamless Nights, my favorite story of the lot, Allen Beck is terrorized by nightmares that leave him desperate for a cure that eventually comes in the form of a pill called Dreamless Nights. Allen soon finds out that dreams do come true.
In Cheap Thrills, James Lewis is trying to forget the night his wife was killed but her ghost and the man responsible for her death are making it incredibly difficult.
If you like your horror in small satisfying bites, I highly recommend you check this book out. You will not be disappointed.
