The Adventures of Chain is the story of the making of a family. Jack McCain is a dedicated detective who it would seem has spent far too many years focused solely on his career. Fortunately, this situation is about to change for the better. The detective responds to a call. Instead of finding a suspect, however, he finds a wolf pup who is in extremely bad shape. For some reason, McCain takes pity on the poor creature and adopts Chain as a pet and companion.
Chain and the detective become inseparable. What’s more, the pair becomes quite a crime fighting duo. It would seem that Chain has a natural sense of compassion and deep desire to help those in need, much like Jack McCain’s own natural tendencies. Through these gifts, McCain meets his wife, the children he adopts as his own, and creates an extremely loving family.
My opinion of The Adventures of Chain is rather mixed. I quite enjoyed and was touched by the story of Chain and McCain as they gradually found themselves part of the family they never knew they wanted. However, part way through the book there was a surprising turn that not only did I not expect but I thought dramatically took away from the very good storyline. I’m not sure why the author thought that the wolves had to be supernatural or how this would benefit the characters.
