Detective Victor Bayne is an officer of a different kind, an elite Psycop with a psychic ability that allows him to see and communicate with the dead. While the ability may be helpful in solving murders, seeing ghosts is not only a strain on his mental state, but also his relationship with fellow detective, Jacob Marks. When Victor’s talent goes into hyper drive with more spirits than ever reaching out for him, and a new work partner, Roger Burke, whose over-friendly behavior doesn’t seem quite right, Victor struggles to find answers before he becomes a danger to himself and Jacob.
Written from a first-person perspective, right away the reader is thrown into the somewhat shaky mental state of Victor, and he comes across as not only a very believable character, but also sympathetic as he battles with the unwanted increase in spirit activity around him, and the sarcastic sense of humor he maintains makes him a character that’s easy to like and get attached to. Despite his apprehensiveness to deepen his relationship with Jacob at first, the level of passion they hold for each is high, and as they interact outside the bedroom, the care and concern they hold for each other shows clear. The pace of the novel flows fast and smooth, and the detailed writing lets the reader see the world through Victor’s eyes, the dead and all. For anyone who enjoyed M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense, Criss Cross is a grittier, sexier, must read tale in the same vein.
