This story apparently follows up another story and follows the life of a small town English professor as she goes through life with her very Catholic family, slipping through romances not of her own making, and solving murder mysteries that take place in or around her little sphere of the universe.
Several things happened to me as I read this book. The most important one was that I kept wanting to turn the page to see what happened next. Yet, even as I kept turning those pages I found myself getting annoyed and frustrated as I read on. I was not annoyed or frustrated with the writing or the story, however, so much as I was at the characters. Then I realized that Kathryn Lively has done something that many writers attempt but that few accomplish: She has made her characters real. They are so real I want shake the main character to tell her kick off the traces of the family and belief system that are repressing her and making things so difficult and awkward to read. But, I am still reading. I keep turning those pages.
