Jordan McAdam’s life is thrown into chaos when her police partner and the man she loves, Gage, dies in her arms after a brutal attack by an otherworldly being. When Jordan learns Gage’s murderer is a demon, she begins to seek revenge against the nefarious race of cursed ancient creatures. Yet with each demon she slays, she can’t vanquish her feelings of loss over Gage, until one night during a battle, he comes to her aid. Stunned at seeing her five years deceased lover alive, she learns he never died that night, but absorbed the demon’s power and has also been slaying demons. As they join forces to stop a greater demon from entering the world, Jordan struggles to overcome Gage’s desertion from her, knowing that the one thing she can’t deny is that five years has done nothing to lessen her desire for him.
With an interesting background behind the creation of the demon race, the plot of Shadow Destroyers balances the mix of supernatural and the real world very well. Jordan is a strong and independent heroine, who is as fully capable of coming to Gage’s rescue as he is to coming to hers. Her emotions of betrayal and hurt come across true, and author Somers does an excellent job of creating high sexual tension and building desire between Jordan and Gage after their reunion which leads to passionate love scenes. As the novel draws to a close, a few questions linger unanswered, leaving it with a feeling that eventually this exciting couple may return as they continue to protect the world from darkness.
