When Harlan Quinn returns to his small hometown in Delta, Colorado as the new Sheriff, his goal is to discover and break-up one of the largest underground drug rings in the west, but to his surprise, his new neighbor is his old best friend and lover from high school, Dan Avers, now a middle-aged history teacher bearing physical and emotional scars from a tragic car accident. As Quinn and Dan begin to grow closer, they realize that not even twenty years of separation has diminished their passion for each other.
As they reunite, the emotions Quinn and Dan feel toward each other come across believable and the comfort of their relationship makes it clear that they had once been close. Their teenage relationship isn’t given much detail however, and it would have been interesting to see both men reminisce with a clear individual memory. Dan comes across with a touch more depth than Quinn, perhaps because more of his history is given with the car accident, whereas Quinn’s past since leaving him is lightly brushed over. Descriptive details are on the sparse side with sentences coming off a bit choppy instead of producing a smooth reading flow, and the language gets rather repetitive, though at its heart, Old Town New is an entertaining story.
