Life is not simple when Alaina, the beautifully stunning orphan arrives in Alvairo’s life. Unaware of the havoc his handsome looks create on Alaina, they are stuck in a love-hate relationship as neither one will admit love of the other. As family secrets become known, and Alaina’s dark past reappears to haunt her, the death of Alvairo’s father only serves to push both of them over the edge. As both learn to deal with their grief and unshed tears, they take their anger out on each other where their jealousies and frustrations are passionately expressed. Alternating between torturous anticipation and violent outbursts, Alaina and Alvairo are stuck on a road leading to both heaven and hell until they both are forced to face the truth.
While this story keeps you thoroughly entertained with all of the creative nuances Ms. Safi inserts, one can not ignore just how dysfunctional the relationship between Alaina and Alvairo appears to be. While it is clear that they feel greatly for each other, the treatment of the other is often harsh and something I wouldn’t normally attribute to an erotic romance. At the same time, the dark side of human attraction can be strangely addictive and for that, Ms. Safi must be applauded as she subtly spins a web for all to be intrigued. Definitely a good book for when you are looking for something beyond the ‘too simple to believe’ love story.
