In the novel Targets Of Affection, RG Willems introduces readers to likeable protagonist Shelby James. Shelby is a veterinary technician with an obvious love for animals working in Poplar Bluff, a suburb of Saskatoon. When a woman arrives at the clinic with a badly hurt puppy, the victim of a hit and run accident, it pulls Shelby into Miranda’s life, with her sick daughter, Jessie, and abusive ex-husband. When bad things continue to happen to Miranda and those in her life, Shelby starts to wonder about this woman and what is really going on in Miranda’s life, and she finds out more than she would have expected.
This novel, first in RG Willem’s new Shelby James mystery novel series (and her first novel, though she’s published nonfiction books), will have readers riveted from the very first page. It’s a story that is more than a typical mystery, going deeper into psychological issues (something made possibly by Shelby’s husband, a college professor, Jake) than most mysteries, which are simply, “who did this”. It’s an unusual book, and that’s great; it’s not just one more of the same. It’s very well-written, too, with believable and interesting characters. This is a book that readers of mysteries, especially those interested in psychology, and the reasons that something was done instead of just who did this thing, will not want to miss.
