Lonely widow Veronica believes she will never find true love again after the death of her husband five years before. Her small town life style is hardly conducive and nor is the suffocating hold her mother still has over her, even at 42. Then she meets free spirit Patrice and, against all her usual instincts, finds that love sometimes just happens in the most unexpected ways and places - even a bowling competition!
This is a heart warming story where the same gender of both participants adds to the intensity of their relationship as well as constructing the moral maze that Veronica feels she has to navigate where her friends and neighbours, not to mention her mother, are concerned.
There are explicit sexual scenes but, again, these help to describe and emphasize the intense feelings that any love in its first flush can bring. An enjoyable, comforting but also thought provoking read for anyone who likes a romance with twists and turns but with its heart in the right place.
You don’t have to be Sapphic to enjoy Widows Weeds and it deserves a wide audience.
