Take a handful of Egyptian Deities, a couple of studly shape-shifters, a fiercely independent and intelligent woman, and add a few other personalities, with settings that range from the Colorado Mountains, to the Scottish Highlands, to a trip through San Francisco’s BDSM scene and the Vegas Strip for spice, and you have the dish that is Diane Taylor’s Mystique Rogue.
At a little over a hundred pages, this tale is a fast read for a nice, cozy evening of wine sipping and erotica reading. While it begins a tad awkwardly (the Prologue meant to introduce the characters instead seems to be a stumbling block), it soon smoothes out into the tale of a woman who will find love under unusual circumstances. I particularly enjoyed that one of the main character’s obstacles was her scarred face. I would have liked it if the author had spent a little more time on the character’s internal conflicts over disfigurement, such as how it had or had not influenced her self-esteem and ability to accept love from another. Yet, an argument could be made that the main character, being a woman of action, would eschew such internal conflicts as a waste of time. Nonetheless, with the action, the characters, and the sex, it was still a fun read.
