Alan Reece hates his job.  He is a vet that no longer believes that being on call in the middle of the night to nurse a sick cow is heroic or quaint; no matter how wonderful James Herriot makes it seem.  His life was not made any easier when his wife left him, but neglected to take their live in roommate George with her.  To make matters worse, he works with a man who could be James Herriot in the flesh, he loves being a vet, and to top it all off is an Australian beefcake who gets many dubious animal emergency calls by the ladies. He will soon find out that there are far worse things than hating your job.  Alan gets called out in the middle of the night to take a look at Mr. White’s cow that just calved.  He arrives to find Mr. White pale as a sheet.  He was puzzled at to what might severely upset this man who had literally seen it all when it came to caring for livestock.

He flashed his light around in the dark and it landed on the mother, everything looked in order.  Then he flashed it on the calf and he froze, it was completely sound physically, but it also was completely transparent.  He and the farmer studied it for a moment and he reached forward to touch the calf and there was a sudden burst of screaming noise and intense pressure.  The noise stopped suddenly and he reoriented himself.  He now saw   a perfectly normal calf sitting in front of him.  Add in Kate, an ex- medium turned scientist, who is working on a particle acceleration project, and you are in for a fascinating ride. A chain of extraordinary events gets set off the night Alan visits the transparent calf, which may lead to the end of life on Earth.

I could not put this book down.  The author combines a fantastically told story with such humor and sarcastic banter that you simply can’t wait to go to the next page.  The characters are so deep, quirky, and unusual that you would swear they were someone you know.   You even fall in love with Kate’s cat that loves to pee ardently on everything which leads to the unfortunate demise of her computer monitor.  This fantasy is a fascinating tale that is wonderfully funny.  It is an excellent read.
